Hi! I'm Rachel! I’m a Mural Artist & Illustrator based in Shropshire. My style is detailed, whimsical and colourful, influenced by fantasy art and children’s illustration.
Since graduating from Worcester University with a degree in Fine Art Practice in 2011 I have worked on a diverse range of projects including illustrations, murals, and paintings on large scale sculptures and murals large and small. Check out my previous client work and testimonials.
I love working with clients to realise their vision for their artwork, and happy to discuss your project ideas so do get in touch about your project at rachel@etherealearth.co.uk or call 07782 349 782
My paintings come from the enchanted realm of imagination and are often inspired by the pockets of wildness in rural England. The landscapes are often populated by woodland animals, mythical creatures, fairies, goddesses and nature spirits which weave stories through the landscape of my paintings. I use both traditional and digital painting to conjure a whimsical realm which softens the edges of a world that can sometimes be too sharp.
Connecting with nature is very important to me and my ideas for paintings often come whilst walking, kayaking or meditating in the wilder places of this country. Check out my paintings here. To learn more about my process, sneak peaks at future work and more visit my Patreon page to read my blog,
I have been painting and drawing and writing since I was a child. I’m one of those people who just never stopped. As a child I could often be found sitting up in the willow tree at the bottom of the garden dreaming, or painting, drawing or creating something. During my teenage years I was a secret artist, drawing and painting away in my bedroom, I made a lot of dark angsty art that barely anyone saw.
As I grew to be an adult and started to find my way in the world I tried out many different jobs, including; care assistant, receptionist, sales person, dental nurse, directors PA and animal health licensing officer. But always continued creating even if that was making little creatures out of bluetack or drawing things on post it notes and hiding it on colleagues desks to see how long it took them to notice and make them smile.
I didn’t realise that making art full time could be an option for a working class girl from Droitwich. Until, I began reading about the law of attraction and other spiritual ideas. It was then I chose to follow my heart and study Fine Art Practice at University. In my final year at Uni I was lucky enough to win a place on the Speed project, which provided me a grant and entrepreneurial training to start my business. In the near decade since I have been working as a self-employed artist I have persisted at following my dream of becoming the best possible artist I can be.
I commissioned Rachel to come up with a mural for my 4 year old son's new bedroom. I knew the general feel and style I wanted but (being no artist) was limited in my description to words, and pictures I found that touched on what I was aiming for - the works of John Patience's Fern Hollow was my main inspiration. Working with Rachel was fantastic - she listened closely to my brief, and really engaged with my vision of how I wanted the mural to look - what impact and texture it would have. Rachel was intelligent and intuitive throughout that first design process and managed to get down on paper my imaginings. What I found particularly impressive was her attention to detail: e.g. were there particular riverside plants where we lived that I wanted to include on our mural riverside? Would I like the planets to stretch away in the correct scientific order from the sun sinking behind the hills in the village part of the murall?
When Rachel came to draw the mural it was tremendously exciting seeing it develop day by day. It took 2 weeks and each day my 4 year old would rush home after school to see what new detail had emerged.
Rachel is a talented artist, her focus and imaginative approach made the process exciting and stress free. I feel lucky to have found her and our mural is STUNNING. Thank you Rachel!
Rachel's work evokes a childlike wonder in myself. This is one of the main reasons I chose Rachel for my commission. I have a deep love of dragons and fantasy. I wanted something that would remind me of where I live (the Malvern's) and my love of dragons. I didn't want a fierce dragon I wanted something softer, almost dream like. Rachel picked up on that and portrayed it in my commission beautifully. The journey I took with Rachel whilst completing my commission was both nourishing and peaceful. She listens to what you really want and after seeing previous works I was 100 per cent confident she could deliver and she did, I was ecstatic when I saw my painting. I have since gone on to own several of Rachel's works, both originals and prints. I simply love her take on the world and how she transcends that beauty into her whimsical art.
I have always admired Rachel’s art since seeing her work at a Malvern Arts and Craft Market. I am very bubbly happy person so love bright colours. I had a few prints for a Christmas present (that I chose myself) one year and another for a surprise birthday present too. When I had saved a little money I decided I wanted to get a picture made and wouldn’t have looked any further than going to Rachel for a consultation. It was great to have a chat with her during a consultation on what I was expecting from my painting. I sent her lots of photos of things I wanted to include which is always great for making sure you are both thinking the same for something. I loved that Rachel then did 3 drawings for me to choose from that she sent via email as at this point we were going into lockdown. I chose one and asked for a few tweaks which she was more than happy to do for the actual painting. Rachel kept me informed well on the progress and when she brought it to me and I saw it for the first time, I was amazed with how fantastic it was and how she had brought my childhood memories to life. My art piece is very personal to me and my family so I asked for it not to be shown for promotional purposes which she agreed to which I also thought was amazing of her. I would definitely have another piece by Rachel in the future. She is extremely talented x
